10/07/2007- Some of the very popular drugs used to combat osteoperosis and certain cancers can have severe side effects when taken after certain proceedures.
This new groundbreaking research is coming from a group of doctors that includes a new physician at Trinity Health.
Perry Olson has more on the problem what to watch for and how to avoid it in tonight's Eye on Health.
These drugs are some of the most common around 14 million people are on these medications many on fosomax, used to fight osteoperosis. But there can be severe problems with these drugs when combined with other proceedures.
That is Doctor Juan Ulloa a partner in groundbreaking research into the complicaitons of such drugs like fosamax.
That spells trouble for the patient and most don't know it is a possibility. If surgical procedures are done on the mouth and jaw while on the medication it hampers its ability to heal creating bone that is exposed in the mouth, and eventually, bone that dies and becomes infected. It isn't pretty but there is a way around it.
And if you are already on a biophosphonate medication with this side effect, there is an option a test to detect the amount of medicine in your system allows doctors to decide what dental proceedures can be done safely. Dr. Ulloa says the drug companies have started to realize the problem that exists in the last year or so and he's happy to see their response.
They are starting to do that thanks to research from doctors like Dr. Ujjoa. With your Eye on Health, Perry Olson, KX News.
Although most cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw related to Fosamax side effects have occurred after dental work several cases have been reported to occur without any prior dental work. If you are currently taking Fosamax you may be at risk of developing osteonecrosis. If you have been injured by Fosamax side effects you may be entitled to compensation.
