07/19/2011 - On July 14, 2011 the FDA announced an FDA advisory committee will hold a meeting on September 9, 2011 at 8 AM to discuss the benefits and risks of long term bisphosphonate use for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. The drugs that will be reviewed will be Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva and Reclast. The law firm of Ennis & Ennis, P.A. notes this is a necessary step for informing the public of the potential dangers of bisphosphonates.

The meeting is warranted due to the safety concerns of osteonecrosis of the jaw (jawbone death) and atypical femur fractures (unusual broken thigh bone) that may be associated with the long-term use of bisphosphonates.

"Although the FDA required all manufacturers of oral bisphosphonates to add warnings about the risk of bone fractures in October 2010, it is imperative that the FDA provide clear guidelines to physicians and patients about the long term use of these drugs" stated attorney David Ennis. "Our law firm has been investigating Fosamax side effects since 2004 and the injuries our clients have sustained have been devastating" reported Ennis. "Usually over a period of time patients complaints and injuries decline, but with this drug the longer they use the drug the more injuries we are seeing in our practice. Each year we receive more injury complaint and unfortunately for our clients this meeting has come a little too late."

Attorney Ennis recommends that anyone who has taken Fosamax or other similar drug who has sustained a femur fracture or osteonecrosis of the jaw should fill out a MedWatch Form (https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/medwatch-online.htm) with the FDA prior to the hearing. Attorney Ennis commented "The manufacturers are still in denial and patients and physicians need to do their part and notify the FDA."
